contents Free and Inexpensive Materials in the School Media Centers of Kansas. Hughes, Erskine Educational Media Information Retrieval Information Storage Learning Resources Centers Library Surveys Masters Theses Media Research Media Selection Media Specialists Resource Materials Secondary Schools A research project compiled information on the use of free and inexpensive materials in Kansas secondary schools. Forty-six media specialists responded to a questionnaire and checklist and provided data on four topics: 1) selection and acquisition of materials; 2) storage and retrieval systems used in handling materials; 3) subjects and formats of materials; and 4) availability of resource guides. Analysis and interpretation of the responses showed that free and inexpensive materials were widely used but that no selection policies were in existence, the choice of materials resting solely with the individual media specialist. Students and teachers used the media as part of the basic curriculum with the trend being toward a centralized collection housed in the media center and available to all involved in creative inquiry.
