- Book Selection from MARC Tapes. Wainwright, Jane Hills, Jacqueline Citations (References) Information Retrieval Information Services Library Material Selection Online Systems Relevance (Information Retrieval) Search Strategies Selective Dissemination of Information In April 1971 the Aslib Research and Development Department began a study on selective dissemination from MARC tapes. The aim of the project was to explore the technical and economic feasibility of providing selective notifications of current books, by extraction from MARC tapes, to specialized libraries. Typical of the potential customers envisaged would be Aslib member organizations. A comparison would be made of the utility of the various elements in the MARC record as search keys. The project was planned in six phases: (1) planning and program specification for MARC file creation and searching; (2) programing; (3) exploratory work with test file; (4) pilot operation with users; (5) analysis of results, conclusions, report; and, (6) market survey. This report covers the first five phases of the project. (Author/SJ)
