- The Best in Children's Books: The University of Chicago Guide to Children's Literature 1966-1972. Sutherland, Zena, Ed. Adolescent Literature Book Reviews Books Childrens Literature Library Material Selection Literature Literature Appreciation Literature Guides Reading Material Selection Reading Materials These book reviews have been selected by the editor from those already published in the "Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books." Except for those books listed under the titles coded as "Additional" or "Special Reader," all of the books listed have received a rating of "Recommended." These books are considered to be the best available in children's literature because they have a distinctive literary style, that is, a well-constructed plot; sound characterization with no stereotypes; dialogue that flows naturally and is appropriate to the speaker's age, education, and milieu; and a pervasive theme. The major considerations in informational books are authoritative knowledge, logical organization of material, and accuracy. The reviews are listed alphabetically by the author's name and are numbered in sequence to facilitate the use of the six indexes at the back of the book: title index, developmental values index, curricular use index, reading level index, subject index, and type of literature index.
