  • Ohio's School Libraries/Media Centers; A Statistical Report With Comments. Elementary Education Junior High Schools Learning Resources Centers Librarians Library Expenditures Library Materials Library Surveys Media Specialists School Libraries Secondary Education State Standards State Surveys Statistical Surveys A statistical survey was made to gather information on certificated personnel, materials and expenditures in school libraries and /or media centers in Ohio. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire sent to all schools, grades K-12, in the state. Results indicated that there was a critical shortage of trained personnel, that material collections needed to be expanded and that per capita expenditures were too low. State standards recommended that at least 3900 schools should be served by one or more certificated specialists, but only 1182 such professionals were employed. Statewide figures showed an average of 8.6 books per pupil, but individual schools varied greatly and only 56% met the state requirement for library expenditures per student. Additional, improved studies were recommended to keep track of changes over time and to begin to assess the quality, as opposed to merely the quantity, of library resources and services. An extensive series of tables is included in the report, providing detailed data on state standards and on actual expenditures, materials, and personnel employed. (PB)
