All the entries are hardbound (although many are also available in paperback) and were in print at the time the guide was completed. Each title was evaluated by members of the Picture Book Committee of the National Council of Teachers of English. Books were selected on the basis that they "provide children with enjoyable, informative, and discriminating literary experiences; foster the habit of reading; and initiate an appreciation for and understanding of graphic arts." The age range of reader appeal or interest is indicated and comments on the story or theme as well as the style of art and the media used in creating the illustrations is provided in the annotation. Divided into four categories (Me and My Family, Other People, The World I Live In, and The Imaginative World) are works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. In addition to the bibliographic list, an index of authors, illustrators, and titles is included. (HOD) |
