Large and small groups, panel discussions, and individual and group reports are all employed, with an emphasis on research techniques. Each student selects a major problem in 20th century America and does an in-depth research project on his topic, including its background, causes, and possible solutions. The course of study contains three sections: Overview, Units, and Materials. The overview presents the philosophy, major course objectives, samples of student handouts using the inquiry approach, a course description, major units, schedule of the year-long course, books to be used in the course, and pre and post test. Six units are outlined: The Rise of Industrialism, Reform in America, The U. S. Becoming a World Power, the Golden Twenties, the New Deal and World War II, and the Challenges of a New Era. A simulation list, two simulation games, and a book, film, and audiovisual list conclude the course of study. (KSM)
