Each of the papers deals with the origins and growth of Federal map collections. The first of these, "History of the Army Map Service Map Collection" by Mary Murphy, traces the history and personalities of the Army Map Service from World War I to 1968. "Congress' First Map Collection" by Richard W. Stephenson gives the early history of the Library of Congress map collection and discusses some of the items in the collection which were later destroyed. The third paper is titled "Early Years in the Map Division, Library of Congress" by Clara E. Le Gear. It describes the map department which was established in 1897 and the administration of Philip Lee Phillips who was the superintendent for 27 years and had a great impact on the development of the department. The final paper "The National Archives of the United States: A Repository of the Official Records of the History of American Cartography" by Herman R. Friis presents a brief description of the nature, operations and some of the holdings of the Cartographic Branch of the National Archives. (JG) |
