- The Association of American Library Schools, 1915-1968: An Analytical History. Davis, Donald Gordon, Jr. History Library Associations Library Education Library Research Library Schools Professional Associations The purpose of this historical study of the Association of American Library Schools (AALS) was to determine the actual role and influence of the AALS in library education. The author's hypothesis is that the influence of an association of professional schools on professional education is related to the level of involvement of the association with the national professional association and the professional schools. Accordingly, he presents a chronological framework of the association history with its major trends and goals, the structural development of organization and leadership, its programs of activity in support of its goals and analyzes its relationship to other organizations, member schools and its contributions to library education. He concludes that the AALS has not played a very influential part in the development of library education and that its main weaknesses was a lack of identity. In addition vague goals, conflicting loyalties and ineffective leadership perpetuated the identity problem and thwarted the problem-solving ability of the organization. The appendix contains chronological tables of the leadership and institutional membership of the AALS from 1915-1968. (JG)
