The first part of the booklet discusses ways in which the teacher can become better acquainted with the general reading habits of the students (included are a reading questionnaire and an interest inventory test). The second section asks (1) How important is it to read a newspaper? (2) What do people read in newspapers? (3) How do your parents read the newspaper? and (4) How should you read the newspaper? The third and largest section discusses the newspaper as a teaching aid for specific courses, as a means of interesting slow learners, evaluate mass media, as an aid to developing reading habits, as a source of writing examples, and as a living textbook. Newspaper units for grades7-10 are also provided. The booklet concludes with a section on the bulletin board, scrapbook, vertical file, and the use of the library. Appendixes provide an outline for a local workshop; a survey of leading newspapers; a list of suspensions; mergers, changes, and new dailies in 1960; a list of the newspapers with the largest circulations; and a selected bibliography.
