| contents | Libraries in Wisconsin Institutions: Status Report. Merriam, Elizabeth B. Financial Support Institutional Libraries Institutionalized Persons Institutions Library Services Library Surveys Special Libraries State Surveys The Wisconsin Library Association Round Table of Hospitals and Institutional Librarians became concerned about adequate funding of institutional libraries; the right of institutionalized persons to read and to have educational, legal, and recreational materials; and the development of staff libraries for treatment, rehabilitation, and research purposes. Seeing a need for first having a concrete data base, the librarians sent out questionnaires and collected them from institutions for the mentally ill and retarded; state penal facilities; and county, state, and V.A. hospitals. The results of the survey, to which 52 Wisconsin institutions responded, are gathered in a series of tables covering expenditures; institutional populations; funding, both institutional and by grants; salaries; collections; services; facilities; and staff libraries. From the survey grew a recommendation that the state create a position of coordinator of institutional libraries to help improve services, quality of staffing, and cooperation among institutional libraries.
