contents A System for Inter-Library Communication (SILC). Final Report. Hayes, R. M. Computers Cost Effectiveness Feasibility Studies Guides Information Systems Interlibrary Loans Library Networks Performance Specifications Time Sharing A study was made of the use of time-sharing computer systems as a means of communication, accounting, message switching, and referral in a System for Inter-Library Communication (SILC). The purpose of the study was to develop data on which to evaluate the feasibility of such a system; the results are reported in terms of four issues: technical feasibility, operational feasibility, management feasibility, and economic feasibility. The evaluations are essentially positive with respect to all four issues, and the report recommends proceeding further in development and pilot test of the operation. The report starts with an introduction, in which the background for the study is presented, the conclusions concerning feasibility are summarized, and the recommendations made. It is followed by a section presenting specifications for SILC: the concept, the functions, the parameters of operation. The results of study of each of the four issues with respect to feasibility are then presented. The report concludes with several appendixes: a bibliography of references, a glossary, a draft program for steps in future development, and a draft operations manual. (Author)
