contents An Exploratory Study of the Contents of Non-Fiction Young Adult Book Reviews. Barrette, Pierre P. Adolescents Book Reviews Books Library Material Selection Public Libraries School Libraries Statistical Analysis Young Adults Youth Some 300 reviews of non-fiction, young adult books were examined to see if they contained information needed by librarians. Six essential items were identified: authoritative treatment, comparisons with other books, a scope statement, a description of the author's background, a basis of work statement, and a purpose statement. The study was limited to the November 1971 through August 1972 issues of School Library Journal, Library Journal, and Publisher's Weekly. Frequency data tables were compiled and analyzed statistically. The average occurrence of any criteria was about 50 percent. It was concluded that the reviews are inadequate to aid a librarian in intelligent book selection. A further study using more review journals is recommended. (PF)
