Hudon, Sister Mary Oliver Audiovisual Aids Books Childrens Literature Doctoral Dissertations Grade 2 Independent Reading Motivation Techniques Reading Reading Interests Reading Research This study assessed the effectiveness of two motivational techniques for promoting interest in reading by using two criteria: the number of books withdrawn from the classroom library and the scores obtained on the Primary Pupil Reading Attitude Inventory (PPRAI). Thirty second-grade classes were randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions: 10 classes were assigned to the book treatment condition in which 20 selected storybooks were read to the class by the teacher; 10 classes were assigned to the audiovisual treatment condition in which the same storybooks were presented through the medium of sound filmstrips; and 10 classes served as a control group. A special collection of 50 storybooks was available on an overnight loan basis in all the classes in the study. Class means on the circulation rate were used to analyze the difference in the amount of interest there was in storybooks between the treatment and the control classes. Students in all classes were given the PPRAI 1 week after the treatment variable was discontinued. The results indicated that greater interest was promoted in classes where the audiovisual mode of presentation was used. No significant differences were found in attitude toward reading.
