- Library Binding Manual. A Handbook of Useful Procedures for the Maintenance of Library Volumes. Tauber, Maurice F., Ed. Books Evaluation Criteria Guides Library Collections Library Materials Library Policy Library Standards Library Technical Processes Maintenance Preservation Publishing Industry Repair Standards Library binding concerns itself with the maintenance of a volume for reader usability and the maximum number of circulations, uses, or withdrawals. This manual has been designed as an introduction to binding for libraries. It is intended to assist librarians in the preparation of materials for binding, and to instruct them in the care of their collections. Books, periodicals, other serials, pamphlets, newspapers, and other printed materials are considered. Beginning with a history of binding, this book then details modern processes and materials. Sound library policy on binding, how to prepare material for the bindery, and which binding best suits which literature format are discussed. A ten-point check list on binding quality, a future look at maintenance of library materials, and the "Library Binding Institute Standard for Library Binding" (revised) comprise the closing chapters. The 13 appendixes include technical terms in library binding, library binding budgets, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission "Trade Practice Rules for the Library Binding Industry," and "Instructions on Salvaging Water-Damaged Books."
