Cataloging College Libraries Data Collection Data Processing Documentation Guides Higher Education Library Automation Library Technical Processes Management Information Systems Program Descriptions Serials During the fall of 1973, the Mankato State College library began improvements on its computerized serials processing system. A major data collection effort, involving many of the library staff, was accomplished in two main phases: the shelf list phase, from January 1 to April 30, 1974, and the kardex phase from May 1 to July 31, 1974. The data collection team included catalogers, serials and public services librarians, and clerical staff. All worked together in the development of a procedures manual and in the handling of problem entries as they were encountered. The shelf list phase accomplished the interfiling of 11 separate shelf lists, classified by the Library of Congress system, and, in another sequence, the interfiling of ten Dewey shelf lists. During the project 8,000 serial entries and 1,500 periodical titles were processed and coded into computer format. The major portion of this report consists of the serials data collection procedures and the temporary serials system program documentation. (Author/SL)
