The National Program for Library and Information Services could provide substantial improvement in the provision of information services to schools. The national program could provide centralized material processing, automated information retrieval, and staff development opportunities. In return, the school media center could provide expertise in the use of audiovisual technology and open its collection to public use. In order to participate in the national program, a school should meet standards calling for a full range of services in five broad areas: access, reference, production, instruction, and consultation. Incentives should be provided to encourage school districts to meet the standards. Although difficulties can be expected in trying to bring all schools into national library network, good planning and coordination could overcome most obstacles. (Author/PF)
