  • Handbook of Data Processing for Libraries. Second Edition. Hayes, Robert M. Becker, Joseph Computers Cost Effectiveness Data Processing Electronic Equipment Guides Libraries Library Automation Library Networks Library Services Management Systems Systems Approach This volume is designed to be a comprehensive guide to the evaluation and use of computers and modern data processing systems in libraries. It is organized into four sections, each covering a major facet of library automation. Part 1 provides a mechanized introduction to library data processing, including its benefits and costs, a review of its usefulness in decision making, and cost accounting. Part 2 presents the systems approach to development and evaluation of applications to library data processing--necessary flow charts, systems budgeting, staffing, programing, phase-over, and orientation. Part 3 is designed to introduce computer technology including machine language, computer hardware and software, and evaluation criteria. In part 4, the various library subsystems are analyzed, and operational examples are described--administration, ordering, cataloging, circulation, serials, interlibrary loans, and information services. A glossary and references are provided. (Author/SL)
