Cultural Centers History Information Centers Librarians Library Services Outreach Programs Public Libraries Social Services Social Work The origin of the idea that public libraries ought to provide social service and entertainment can be traced back to the voluntary uplift and cultural societies of the nineteenth century. The book-reading public was never large, leading librarians to seek a function in other areas, especially those better served today by social workers. From an analysis of the history of social and cultural activity in the library it is concluded that librarians should become experts in other fields such as history of books, writing and communication, printing technology, copyright law, book design, and American publishing, but that they should confine themselves to the concept that libraries are places for books and reading.
