Administrator Responsibility Budgeting College Libraries Library Acquisition Library Collections Library Cooperation Library Expenditures Library Material Selection Library Surveys Policy Formation Research Libraries Staff Role In July, 1974, questionnaires were mailed to 90 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries, to determine their collection development methods: the degree of structure and formalization of the process, the role of collection development offices or committees, participation in certain decisions, the form and use of policies, participation in cooperative projects and the evaluation of collections. Survey results from 60 of the libraries indicated a recognition of the need for a formally organized collection development function. Eighty five percent of the libraries have either an individual collection development officer, a functioning committee, or both. However, the role and responsibilities of the personnel vary widely. In most cases, major budget decisions remain the responsibility of the library director. Actual selection of materials is typically coordinated by the collection development office. The development of written collections or acquisitions policies is seen as a major role of the office, in cooperation with other staff. The survey indicates that collection development is evolving toward increased formalization, more coordination of diverse interests, increased reliance on cooperative activities, and increased emphasis on collection weeding and secondary storage.
