| contents | Library Manpower: A Study of Demand and Supply. Kahl, Anne S. De La Vergne, Mary I. Bibliographies College Libraries Employment Opportunities Employment Projections Interviews Labor Market Labor Needs Labor Supply Librarians Libraries Library Schools Literature Reviews Longitudinal Studies Minority Groups Occupational Information Personnel Needs Public Libraries School Libraries The Bureau of Labor Statistics was awarded a contract to develop information that would present a comprehensive view of library manpower demand and supply through the mid-1980's. The study developed projections of employment requirements by employment setting--school, public, academic, and special library--and provided information on job functions and educational requirements. The study entailed two major collection phases: a detailed search of existing literature for statistics and other related information, and personal interviews. Among the conclusions of the study were that employment in school libraries is expected to grow slowly, with most of the growth occurring after 1980, with the reverse being true for the academic librarian for whom it is expected that employment growth will come to a virtual halt after 1980; and that in contrast to the anticipated tight job market for beginning librarians, demand is expected to remain strong for black and other minority librarians, community outreach libarians, media/audiovisual specialist, library automation specialists, and experienced library administrators and supervisory librarians. An interview guide, a list of staff position descriptions, and a selected bibliography are included. (Author/KKC) |
