contents Weeding Library Collections. Slote, Stanley J. Evaluation Criteria Evaluation Methods Guidelines Library Collections Library Material Selection Library Standards Research Methodology Research Reviews (Publications) Use Studies This work, based on two recent research projects in the weeding of library collections and the identification of core collections, provides a comprehensive summary of the literature and research on these topics. It also presents practical guidance in weeding for the professional librarian or for the library school student. The book is divided into two parts: a background and introduction to weeding; and a summary of research projects and weeding methods. The first section deals with such topics as traditional approaches to weeding, related library standards, present judgmental criteria, recommended objectives, methods used, and core collections for specific types of libraries. Part two covers an analysis and review of the literature, research study assumptions, summaries of the Five Library Study and the Harrison Public Library study, patterns of use in libraries, and how to weed. Five appendixes documenting the research methodology, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index conclude the work. (Author/SL)
