In order to gain knowledge of the needs and views of library users throughout the country, the Commission conducted a sereis of regional hearings and supported four research studies. As its major project, the Commission drafted a proposal for the National Program for Library and Information Services. A national information network--a single, unified system encompassing state networks, multi-state networks, and specialized networks--was designed to coordinate the nation's library and information services. Further revision and study of the program was planned as part of the complex process of national planning in a democratic society. (Author/PF)
