The Public Libraries and Museums Act of 1964 charged both national and local government with the improvement of local public libraries. When some of the local library authorities proved too small to be viable, they were combined into fewer and larger regional units under the Local Government Act of 1972. While this increases resources, the public library must still rely on others for at least some of the books and information it needs. To facilitate resource sharing, various national-level libraries were consolidated into one national library under the British Library Act of 1972. This new library is the principal national depository for British copyright publications, the center for reference and lending service for all subject fields, the main source of support for research in library and information science, the producer of the national bibliography, and the major developer and operator of computer-based bibliographic and other services.
