contents The Role of the Beginning Librarian in University Libraries. ACRL Publications in Librarianship No. 37. Edwards, Ralph M. Administrator Attitudes College Libraries Employee Attitudes Librarians Library Surveys Professional Recognition Questionnaires Role Perception Staff Role Statistical Data Beginning librarians and their supervisors on the eight campuses of the University of California were surveyed concerning the work expected of professional librarians. Information was gathered by the use of interviews, job descriptions, and a checklist of duties performed. It was found that there was a lack of clarity in defining the proper role of a beginning university librarian and that many were assigned tasks considered subprofessional. A compilation of the checklist of tasks is presented in two tables, and the results of the interviews are covered in eight tables. A bibliography of over 90 items is included. The checklist of library tasks, a list of library tasks, and the interview questionnaire are appended. (DS)
