- Farewell to Alexandria: Solutions to Space, Growth, and Performance Problems of Libraries. Gore, Daniel, Ed. Change Strategies Citation Indexes College Libraries Conference Reports Growth Patterns Library Collections Library Expenditures Library Facilities Library Services Public Libraries Research Libraries Statistical Analysis All of the contributions in this volume, except the last, were presented at a conference sponsored by the Associated Colleges of the Midwest, held in Chicago, April 17-18, 1975. Entitled "Touching Bottom in the Bottomless Pit," the conference was intended to open a national debate on space, growth, and performance problems of libraries--academic libraries in particular, but other types as well. The major issue discussed was, "Can library growth be curbed or halted without detriment to the central mission of librarians, namely the provision of books to readers." Speakers outlined trends in the financing and planning of libraries, methods for analyzing library collections, and strategies for limiting growth. The panel discussion that ended the program is transcribed, and the editor's strategy for limiting library growth is presented in a final essay. (Author/PF)
