The system is divided into ten computerized functions, each supporting a specific type of library processing. The library staff communicates on-line with the system using four on-line files for searching: the MARC file, the In Process File, the Catalog Data File, and the Reference File. The files are identified and restricted by library; this allows multi-library access to BALLOTS files but only the library owning the file can update its records. The system has been in operation since November, 1972, and 90% of the technical processing is now automated. (CH)
