| contents | Developing a Policy on Institutional Research for Black Hawk College. Quayle, Thomas Stevens, Mary A. Administrative Organization Community Colleges Governance Incentive Grants Institutional Research Literature Reviews National Norms Research Needs Teacher Participation Two Year Colleges In order to study the general objectives, methods, and provisions for institutional research in the community college, this document surveys the pertinent literature and reviews institutional research practices at selected community colleges. In general, three basic governance structure models are identified which represent varying relationships between the chief officer of institutional research, the staff, and the college president. Although most institutions have no set policies or procedures relating to institutional research, those that do: (1) provide recognition of the value subjects of such research, and (3) establish priorities and procedures for the chief officer. Methods of increasing faculty participation in institutional research are identified as: maintenance of a professional library, establishment of incentive mini-grants, and appointment of an advisory research committee. On the basis of this information, past institutional research efforts at Black Hawk College (Illinois) are critically evaluated, and recommendations are made to improve institutional research at the college in the future.
