Community Attitudes Community Characteristics Demography Leisure Time Library Collections Library Services Library Surveys Public Libraries State Surveys Statistical Data Use Studies A study was conducted to analyze the quantitative and attitudinal variables that affect the nature and extent of use of the New Jersey public libraries. The first phase of the study consisted of a series of group discussions which focused on public knowledge of library facilities, attitudes and interests of the public, and library use patterns. Hypotheses drawn from the discussions were tested in a second phase statewide survey of adults which examined: (1) the extent of use of public and other types of libraries; (2) reasons for library use; (3) interest in specific library services; (4) the importance of public libraries; (5) attitudes relating to accessibility and availability; and (6) leisure and life style patterns, including reading.
