- GO, PEP, and POP! Baeckler, Virginia County Libraries Innovation Library Administration Library Services Outreach Programs Public Libraries Public Relations Publicize Here are 250 tested ideas for lively libraries, from GO (Getting Outside) to PEP (Programs, Exhibits, Projects) and POP (Positive Operating Procedures), collected by the Mercer County (New Jersey) Library at Trenton. GO ideas include public relations and outreach ideas ranging from ads at the drive-in movie to attending high school sports events or adopting a sister library. PEP tips, designed for attracting new audiences, emphasize local resources, low- or no-budget activities, and relevance to the community. Some of the numerous ideas are: a repair clinic for motorcycle freaks, an exhibit for local craftsmen, a "thank-you" party for patrons and volunteers, health screenings, and spontaneous events and treats. POP includes ways of making the library more fun, less awesome, and more responsive: a spontaneous "mercy moment"--a smile instead of a fine; a move outside on a sunny day; a give-away section for gift books; bright colors; and lots more.
