American Indian Reservations American Indians Demonstration Programs Federal Programs Information Needs Information Services Libraries Library Services Outreach Programs Program Evaluation The National Indian Education Association operated a research and demonstration project to provide library and information services to three American Indian reservations over a period of four years. Attempts were made to determine what kinds of information services the people themselves wanted, and then a program was developed to meet these needs. The three demonstration sites were Rough Rock on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota, and Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation in New York. (For individual reports on these sites consult ED 066 191-195). Activities included developing library administrative organizations, facilities, staffs, librarianship training, and outreach programs. Equipment, print materials, and audiovisual materials were purchased. An evaluation concentrated on problems in the areas of personnel, administration, facilities, funding, politics, and programs. However, because of the general success of the project, extension of the project to other localities, with some procedural changes, was recommended. (Author/LS) |
