| contents | A History of the Community Junior College in Illinois: 1901-1972. Hardin, Thomas Lewis Community Colleges Doctoral Dissertations Educational Finance Educational History Educational Legislation Educational Philosophy Primary Sources Statewide Planning Two Year Colleges The purpose of this doctoral dissertation is to examine extensively the general development of the Illinois junior college. Primary sources available at the University of Chicago, the State Historical Library and the State Archives in Springfield, and university libraries around the state, heretofore unused, are brought together in one general history. The origins of the Illinois junior college movement are historically reviewed followed by an examination of the establishment and growth of public and private junior colleges in Illinois from 1900 to 1930. Various aspects of growth between 1930 and 1950 are discussed. Legislation which expanded the scope and purpose of Illinois junior college public funding and began state-wide planning from 1950 through 1960 is discussed. The writing and implementation of the Master Plan to reorganize public higher education in Illinois is analyzed followed by a review of events transpiring as the 1965 Act (Master Plan) was implemented. Excitement and change has occurred in Illinois because of establishment and state-wide expansion of the junior college. Recommendations for future consideration and suggestions for further study are included in the final chapter of this study along with the author's conclusions. (JDS) |
