| contents | The Role of the Library or Media Center in Education in the Virgin Islands. Haizlip, Harold C. Elementary Education Learning Resources Centers Librarians Library Role School Libraries Secondary Education Speeches Difficulties specific to the Virgin Islands and the general rapid advances in technology require the rethinking of the role of libraries. Libraries and media centers should be called "information centers" to reflect the explosion of information which is outdating the traditional media. Plans are underway in the Virgin Islands to develop computer information links with the mainland United States and Puerto Rico. These links would have profound implications for such a geographically remote area. Current problems of librarians in Virgin Islands schools, however, have little to do with computers. The rote-learning curriculum and the frequent use of librarians as babysitters restrict the library's effectiveness. Rates of college failure among graduates of Virgin Islands schools and the high dropout rate reflect the lack of orientation toward individual needs. Students should be liberated to explore and analyze in their own ways. The library can facilitate needed instructional individualization. Appendixes accompanying this speech include a record of the question answer period which followed. (KB) |
