Lowenthal, Helen Page, Priscilla Community Characteristics Community Needs Library Services Public Libraries Use Studies This study is a survey of the town of Springfield, Vermont and an evaluation of its library resources and services developed as Phase II of the Institute on Developing Dynamic Public Library Services Responsive to Community Needs. Long range plans were developed to meet discovered community needs and techniques learned from participation in the Institute were taught to other Vermont library staff members. Demographic data came from the U.S. Census of Population, 1970, Vermont, while population projections were provided by the Springfield Town Planner. Community organizations received mailed questionnaires; 63 of the 123 responded. Specific recommendations were made for improving library space, extending service hours to meet the needs of the community, and weeding and updating book collections. (AP)
