American Culture Annotated Bibliographies Data Collection Libraries Library Materials Library Surveys National Programs National Surveys Program Evaluation Special Programs Statistical Data United States History In 1975 the American Library Association (ALA) prepared and distributed nationally lists of materials for younger readers and adults to stimulate interest in the America Issues Forum. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the distribution system and quality of the lists. Questionnaires were adapted for random samples of school, academic, and public libraries, community organizations, and state library agencies, and mailed to 6,533 respondents. Seventeen percent replied. Effectiveness of distribution was measured by receipt of lists, and sources from which they were obtained. Three quarters of the respondents received lists. Most learned about and obtained them from the ALA and state library agencies. List quality was measured by activities reported for making list materials available e.g., checking holdings, purchasing, rental, as well as uses of, opinions on quality, and degree of satisfaction with lists. Two thirds of the respondents used the lists and all types of libraries conducted activities to make materials available. A majority of respondents gave the lists a positive rating for quality and 90 percent were satisfied with them. The study concluded that the distribution system was effective for the sample and that the lists were perceived to be of high quality. The appendices include the lists for adults and young readers, questionnaires, and data tables. (KP)
