And Others Accident Prevention Elementary Secondary Education Foreign Countries Injuries Physical Education Physical Recreation Programs School Safety Surveys The major purpose of this investigation was to collect, compile, analyze, and interpret data on the number and nature of injuries occurring in physical education classes and athletic activities in grades K-12 within Alberta schools. Subsidiary purposes were to develop a viable injury reporting form, a concise instructional pamphlet to accompany the injury reporting form, and a computer program for the analysis of the data obtained. The study spanned a twelve-month period from May 15, 1975 to May 14, 1976. Recordable injuries that occurred during this twelve-month period in physical education instruction, intramural activity, interscholastic activity, recess, or free activity before school, after school, or at noon hour was recorded on the Alberta School Accident Report Form with a copy being forwarded to the researchers. Data obtained was arranged and presented in two sections: (1) Results for Kindergarten to the Sixth Grade and (2) Results for Grades Seven to Twelve. Summaries and general recommendations for each group were made. General recommendations for the entire study population are that: (1) a booklet on injury prevention and care be developed and distributed to teachers and coaches; (2) all schools in the province be encouraged to implement an accident reporting and investigation system as soon as practically feasible; (3) a provincial school safety coordinator or supervisor be appointed to analyze sports injury statistics annually, initiate accident prevention programs through the system, and develop a library of resource materials for use by teachers and coaches; and (4) coaches and physical education instructors should be cognizant of pertinent accident information relation to activities, be able to institute appropriate accident prevention procedures, and be qualified in first aid procedures.
