Moskowitz, Adeline Books Childrens Literature Doctoral Dissertations Educational Research Elementary Education English Instruction Inservice Teacher Education Language Arts Teacher Education Ninety-one teachers in three elementary schools, kindergarten through sixth grade, participated in a study of the relationships between teachers' educational preparation in the area of children's literature and the role of children's literature in their classrooms. Each teacher completed a questionnaire about educational preparation, reading of journals in the field, access to new trade books for children, and number of children's books read during the year, as well as a log of the amount of class time spent on various curriculum areas. Twenty superintendents of neighboring suburban elementary schools completed questionnaires on inservice education. Of the relationships examined, only that between the number of new children's books read and the amount of class time spent on children's literature was statistically significant. Eighty-seven percent indicated that the school library was the major source of new trade books for children. No inservice course in children's literature had ever been offered by the district studied, though five teachers had taken inservice courses while working in other school districts. In general, the investigation suggested that not much children's literature was taught on the elementary-school level. (Author/AA) |
