Cataloging Classification Guides Handicapped Children Instructional Materials Library Services Reference Services Special Education Special Education Teachers Special Libraries The Special Education Department at the Torrens College of Advanced Education in Australia decided in 1973 to set up the special education research and resource centers at the College in conjunction with its training centers for teachers in special and remedial education. The centers would not only provide research facilities and a psycho-educational resource center, but would involve staff and students in community services to handicapped children and their parents by means of a toy library, parent advisory center, and developmental learning center. A special four digit cataloging system was devised which would process, store, select, retrieve, and cross reference all the non-book materials, toys, and equipment, as well as diagnostic and evaluative tests and instructional materials. This report describes services offered at the library, as well as the cataloging, circulation, shelving, and filing systems of this special library model. Appendices include a glossary of library terms, a bibliography of library procedures of toy libraries, and statistics and evaluations. A list of toy manufacturers and suppliers are also appended.
