contents Results of the January 13, 1977 Survey of the Plainedge Community and Comparison with 1974-1976 Surveys: An Interpretive Report with Recommendations. Eisner, Joseph Community Surveys Comparative Analysis Library Collections Library Services Library Surveys Newsletters Public Libraries Publicize Questionnaires Use Studies A nine-question survey was mailed to every fifth home in Plainedge, New York on January 13, 1977. The questionnaires were color coded according to election districts to aid in determining differences in attitudes toward, or use of, the library in relation to location, possible correlation with census data relating to education, income level, etc., or data obtained in 1974-1976 surveys. A question to determine the popularity and impact of a consumer bulletin feature in the Library's newsletter was added to the 1974-1976 questionnaire. A total of 1,186 surveys was mailed; 238, or 20.15 per cent were tabulated. Over 80 per cent of respondents thought the library collections and quality of assistance were good to excellent. Responses were also noted for services, collections, frequency of usage, and reactions to consumer bulletins. A comparison of 1974-1976 and current surveys suggested no substantive opinion change regarding the library's collections; however, there appeared a downward trend regarding the quality of assistance. Analysis of results led to the conclusions that the library should continue existing policies and public relations, but should try to determine the reasons for the downward trend in evaluation of quality of assistance.
