It is intended not to make librarians and students qualified programmers, but to give them enough background information for intelligent discussion of library problems with computer personnel. It may also stimulate the student to specialize in library-computer technology. Unit areas covered are introduction, how a computer works, programming preliminaries, using the COBOL programming language, circulation applications--charging and discharging books, overdue messages and statistics, and serials applications--holdings, periodical receipt cards, claim letters, and update program. Programs and flowcharts in the syllabus present suggested solution to the various problems. Students are encouraged to create their own solutions. Supporting activities include demonstrations, flowcharting, and programming. Materials and equipment include IBM cards, keypunch, and computer facilities. The instructor is urged to check the materials in the syllabus with the computing center to assure that the local center's operating conventions are observed. (Author/KP) |
