  • The Status of Library Technical Assistants Employed by Michigan Public Schools During the School Year 1975-76. Condon, Joyce Employer Employee Relationship Employment Patterns Employment Practices Employment Statistics Job Satisfaction Library Surveys Library Technicians Public Schools Questionnaires Salaries School Libraries This study was conducted to determine the status of Library Technical Assistants (LTAs) in Michigan Public Schools during 1975-76. LTAs and their supervisors responded to questionnaires on the following areas investigated: (1) contract benefits; (2) LTA work--tasks, advantages and disadvantages of position, appraisal by LTAs of their training and future plans; (3) appraisal by professional librarians and administrators of LTA training and work; and (4) the position of library schools on the admittance of LTAs for further study. The findings included: (1) monetary rewards are low; (2) many LTAs are part-time employees without fringe benefits; (3) there is high acceptance of the LTAs by professionals; (4) job satisfaction is high among LTAs working in school media centers; however (5) there is little chance for upward mobility. The study concluded that the LTA has proven beneficial to the media programs in Michigan public schools, but schools are not necessarily beneficial to the LTA. Questionnaires, data sheets and a bibliography are appended. (Author/KP)
