Jones, Dennis And Others College Libraries Databases Decision Making Library Administration Library Networks Library Planning Management Information Systems Performance Criteria Public Libraries Statistical Data The National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (NCHEMS) has completed the development and demonstration of a library statistical data base. The data base, or management information system, was developed for administrators of public and academic libraries. The system provides administrators with a framework of information and standardized data for library management, planning, and decision making; communication and comparison between libraries; and reporting to external agencies and organizations. Included in the final report are: (1) recommendations of the advisory committee to the project; (2) an overview of the pilot test of preliminary versions of selected components of the system in five Pennsylvania libraries with their recommendations for further revisions; (3) a narrative on activities related to the project in other agencies; (4) a brief overview of the conceptual approach used in the design of the systems; and (5) enumeration of seven areas where additional research is required. Appendices include a bibliography, a complete list of publications emanating from the project, evaluation report, performance measures by program areas of the system, and financial report. The framework and conceptual approach, as well as the detailed set of data structures employed in the system, are discussed in related documents. (JPF) |
