Bibliographies Consultants Correctional Institutions Criminal Law Directories Guidelines Human Resources Institutional Libraries Library Material Selection Library Services Library Standards Prisoners Reference Services This publication has been developed to assist correctional administrators and librarians to comply with recent court mandates on prisoners' rights of access to legal reference services and materials. The Introduction includes some basic suggestions for selecting a location for the law library in a correctional facility, and considerations to be taken into account by correctional administrators when planning legal reference services. Two lists of recommended books and reference materials for law libraries in state and federal prisons are provided in Section I; the first suggests books for a minimum collection and the second is an expanded version for a reasonably adequate library that should suffice for most legal research by prisoners. Both contain pertinent bibliographic information. Also included in this section are a sample list of materials for the state of Wisconsin, checklists for shelf space needed to house the collections enumerated above, and a directory of law book publishers. Section II is a directory of law libraries that offer services to prisoners, e.g., photocopying of statutes and reference services. Entries are arranged by state and include the types of services offered and specific eligibility requirements. Section III is a directory of law library consultants to correctional institutions, arranged alphabetically by state. The 205 individuals who have expressed a willingness to provide such service are listed alphabetically by name in the appropriate states. (Author/JPF) |
