contents Enhancing the Responsiveness of a Branch Library to Its Neighborhood. Thompson, Gary B. Branch Libraries Disadvantaged Library Services Library Surveys Low Income Groups Needs Assessment Outreach Programs Program Evaluation Public Libraries Questionnaires Use Studies This monograph concerns a research project which employs survey and evaluation techniques to design a delivery system for library services for a low-income neighborhood. The research includes surveys of library users and of residents of the neighborhood, interviews with local organization representatives, and an evaluation of present library services. The daily log reveals the processes and problems involved in doing applied research for a service organization. The middle section of the report depicts some characteristics of potential library users from low-income neighborhoods and their opinions of and interests in library services. Community organizations which provide educational and social programs are discussed. A series of recommendations demonstrate how a branch library can respond to the needs and wants of potential disadvantaged users. The last section synthesizes these research results with sociological theory and research to create principles of responsiveness for any neighborhood human service organization. (Author)
