And Others Archives Data Educational Technology Feasibility Studies Information Networks Information Science Information Services Library Science Shared Services Statistical Analysis Use Studies This study explored the feasibility of establishing archive services in ERIC/IR (ERIC Clearinghouse on Information Resources) to make available survey data for new studies or secondary analysis by researchers in the areas of library and information science and instructional technology. A community of potential users and producers was identified and surveyed to determine both availability of data and demand for sharing data sets, as well as types of data, attitudes of researchers toward sharing their data, and formats in which data are available. Eight alternative levels of data services were identified, ranging from continuation of the current system of informal exchange to an archive with such added services as statistical summaries and data manipulation. These alternatives were considered in terms of adaptability to the ERIC system and cost effectiveness. Findings indicate that a data sharing service is needed, and that ERIC/IR is an appropriate service center. The level of service recommended, in view of costs and amount of data available in other than machine-readable formats, is the listing of data sets in Resources in Education (RIE) with information on availability, and publication by ERIC/IR of an annual directory of these data sets.
