Administrator Attitudes Associate Degrees Bachelors Degrees Employer Attitudes Employment Level Entry Workers Job Skills Medical Education Nurses Nurses Aides Occupational Surveys Postsecondary Education Practical Nursing Status Task Performance The assessment of the current status and viability of practical nursing education in the state of Minnesota focused on the competencies required of the licensed practical nurse (LPN) from the employer's point of view. Because of the overlap of provided services, the competencies were assessed relative to all other levels of nursing (associate degree nurses, diploma nurses, baccalaureate degree nurses, and nursing aides). The information was gathered using three methods: (1) basic "library" research of appropriate documents, (2) interviews of nursing directors, hospital administrators, and others responsible for hiring and/or directing nurses and, (3) distribution of questionnaires to nurses at all levels, directors of nursing, and hospital administrators. When it was discovered that the questionnaire did not discriminate clearly, less reliance was placed on it, especially because of the success of the interviews. Although the results of the interviews showed that those who hire and utilize nurses consider the LPN to be an excellent and often preferred entry level practitioner with the required competencies, the findings of the library research indicated that those who propose changes in the structure and format of nursing education (professional associations and those in educational agencies who direct the fate of nursing programs) support the elimination of the LPN position.
