- La Biblioteca Latino Americana: User Survey (San Jose Public Library). Studies in Librarianship No. 2. Johnstone, James C. And Others Census Figures Community Characteristics Library Collections Library Material Selection Library Services Library Surveys Questionnaires Reading Interests Reading Level School Community Relationship Spanish Americans Spanish Speaking Use Studies To assist a neighborhood committee in applying for federal funding of a bilingual/bicultural library with a distinct Latin American emphasis, a student research group from San Jose State University designed and administered a bilingual questionnaire to a stratified sample of 400 households in the Gardner District of San Jose, California. The questionnaire was designed to measure the reading levels and interests of the Gardner community residents to insure that the library collection would meet the needs of the community. It was hypothesized that library service preferences and collection content of Gardner's Spanish speaking/surnamed residents could be reasonably determined. The survey was prepared using information obtained from literature searches, consultations with local librarians experienced in providing services to Spanish speaking populations, census data, and interviews with personnel in intracommunity agencies. Analysis of the findings indicate that the hypothesis was supported and extensive correlations can be made between the reading interests and sex and age of the target population. Results of all questionnaire items are displayed in tabular form and recommendations for material selection based on interpretations of the data are included. A copy of the grant application which was approved in April 1975, preliminary and final drafts of the bilingual questionnaire, and additional data tables are appended. (JPF)
