College Libraries Governance Information Needs Library Acquisition Library Automation Library Facilities Library Networks Library Planning Library Services Personnel Needs State Universities Statewide Planning Tables (Data) This planning document projects the needs, activities, and performance goals for the University of California's library system. The first four chapters provide a historical overview of the university and its library system; an analysis of the functions of the libraries; a discussion of the need for a new approach to the system's organization, operation, and services; and conclusions to be used in designing a new library system. The chapters which follow are concerned with the identification and location of materials, delivery and use of materials, acquisition and processing, information services, staffing, housing, and organization and governance for each of the six levels of service proposed--departmental and college, campus, regional, university and state, national, and international. The desired response time is also specified for each of these levels. A summary and recommendations for the future, accompanied by cost data, conclude the report. Proposed activities include development of an online union catalog with terminals on all campuses; formalization of existing courses in library use and research; development of an acquisitions formula based on academic programs; and increasing staff in the reference and circulation departments. A computerized simulation model was developed to facilitate statistical analysis of the library's space problem. (JPF)
