Ferguson, Sarah Ann College Libraries Diagrams Equipment Evaluation Futures (of Society) History Information Systems Library Automation Library Circulation Library Networks Objectives Online Systems Two Year Colleges This study describes the design and implementation of the Automated Library Information System (ALIS) as the pilot project for the Dallas County Community College District's Automated Information Resources System (AIRS). The focus of the report is the online circulation subsystem of ALIS, which was implemented in September 1977 as phase one of AIRS, and includes the historical background and philosophy surrounding the decision to convert from the present offline system to a fully automated one; a brief description of how the system's software and hardware operate and system capabilities; and a practical evaluation of the system, including problems experienced in the transition period. This is not intended as a comprehensive evaluation: the system had been in operation less than nine months when this paper was written. (Author/MBR)
