contents Computer Searching and Interlibrary Loans: Where's the Connection? McKee, Anna Marie Keck Williams, Janet Comparative Analysis Correlation Costs Databases Finance Reform Information Retrieval Interlibrary Loans Library Expenditures Social Sciences Special Libraries Statistical Analysis An analysis comparing semi-annual statistics of interlibrary loan transactions to online literature searches from July 1973 to December 1977 was conducted at the Carl Campbell Brigham Library, a social science research library serving professional staff members of the Educational Testing Service (ETS). A highly significant correlation was found between the two variables. This created a problem for the ETS library in budgeting for increased demands on service; however, the effects of these increasing variables were minimized by changes in library policy and procedures. A charge back service for interlibrary loans was initiated to partially recover the costs. The solution was successful in two ways: it deterred unnecessary requests and enhanced the value of the service in the eyes of library patrons. Graphs and tables comparing completed interlibrary loan photoduplication transactions to completed online literature searches, costs for reference services from July 1973 to June 1977, the number of searches per data base in 1977, and references are appended.
