- The Development of a Learning Materials Selection Policy for Austin Community College. Lamar, Christine College Libraries Community Colleges Educational Needs Guidelines Institutional Research Learning Resources Centers Library Acquisition Library Collections Library Material Selection Library Planning Policy Formation Two Year Colleges This paper chronicles the development of a materials selection policy for the library and audio/visual software components of Austin Community College's (ACC) Learning Resource System. The policy would establish authority for selection decisions, the intellectual framework within which decisions are made, and selection criteria and guidelines. It would serve to protect the library and librarians from criticism of the library collection; aid general collection development; and assist librarians in building a collection responsive to user needs and supplemental to college curricula. As an aid to developing a policy appropriate to ACC, Texas community and junior colleges were asked to send copies of their policies. Of 14 respondents, six schools submitted policies which were compared to Calvin Boyer's outline that served as the tentative basis of the ACC policy. The statements generally included most of Boyer's major categories: community description, responsibility for selection, intellectual freedom, complaint procedures, specific policies for material by audience, format, and subject, and gifts and weeding policies. After reviewing study results, ACC drafted its own policy; the first draft was rejected by the governing board because it lacked community description and analysis criteria. Another draft was approved. Appendices present the approved ACC policy and copies of policies from study institutions. (TR)
